Ashley Schafer Talks Better Barrel Races Success

Ashley Schafer is your 2022 Better Barrel Racers Vitalize Futurity Average Champion.

As one of the most well-known barrel trainers, Schafer had four horses competing in the Futurity and one in the Open. A horse named Born On Derby Day is a five-year-old mare that Schafer calls Derby.

“I actually ran both of her parents and they were a couple of the best horses I’ve ever ridden. They sure have not disappointed as producers as well,” Schafer said.

Derby was super smooth through out the Futurity and added to her resume. This was the third futurity that she has one. Schafer says that she has been a fun horse all year.

Schafer also finished third on a horse named Swoon To Be Famous that she calls Swoon. This horse is gaining confidence with every run and getting faster everywhere they go. Schafer says that Swoon fits her very well and she adjusts her styles accordingly to each horse.

“The important thing is just to try to bring out the best in each horse,” Schafer said.

At the BBR Futurity, Schafer competed against big names like Kortney Kizer and Pete Oen. She was also able to set a new arena record aboard Famous Cash Can who happens to be a full sister to Born On Derby Day.

Schafer says it was cool to see full siblings have that kind of success at the same place.
