Barrel Racer Leslie Smalygo’s Wildest Dreams Come True with a Calgary Stampede Win

Leslie Smalygo returns to No. 1 in the World after an intense win at the greatest outdoor show on Earth.

Leslie Smalygo and her equine partner, Gus, had four straight days of barrel racing at the Calgary Stampede and on Championship Sunday, the duo only got faster.

They came into the Semifinals the No. 1 team from Pool C with $18,000 won and their slowest time so far being a 17.14-second run. That would remain their slowest time of the week as they stopped the clock at 16.99 in the Semifinals before laying down a 16.94 in the Final Four.

“I can’t even believe that this happened and even in my wildest dreams, I knew that horse is so special to me, he just has made so much of my life and I could never repay him,” Smalygo said.

An electric crowd on Championship Sunday added to the buzz as Smalygo took center stage to accept her Calgary Stampede Bronze. She is back on top at No. 1 in the WPRA World Standings.

Hailey Kinsel’s 16.986 put her second while Katelyn Scott claimed third and Paige Jones finished fourth.
