The Semifinals are almost set in Calgary as Pool B from The Calgary Stampede finished on Wednesday night.
This year, the format of Calgary looks a little different than years past. There are three pools of 10 athletes battling for 12 total Semifinal spot in each event. Those moving onto the Semifinals are determined by total payoff over three rides/runs. Each round winner now gets $7,000 as well. Formerly, there were only two pools and each athlete would compete five times, with each round winner getting $5,500.
Here’s a look at how things went down in Pool B.
In bareback riding, Cole Franks and Tanner Aus dominated, taking first and second in every round. Aus took Round 1 before Franks took 2 and 3 as both cowboys made $18,000 or more.
In steer wrestling, Scott Gutenthner had two of the fastest times of the rodeo on consecutive days by turning in runs of 3.3 and 3.4 seconds in Rounds 1 and 2. He advanced first in Pool B and behind him was Ty Erickson, Will Lummus and Tristan Martin, a trio of Top 10 finishers in the world in 2022.
Layton Green finished third in Rounds 1 and 3 and won Round 2 to be the top saddle bronc rider in the pool. Stetson Wright and Ross Griffin joined him in dramatic fashion by splitting the win in Round 3 to claim two of the four Semifinal spots.
In tie-down roping, rookie Cash Enderli won the pool without winning a round by making three consecutive runs of 7.9 seconds or faster. He battled a difficult pool as the three cowboys to advance - Brush Minton, Haven Meged and Westyn Hughes - are all ranked in the Top 7 in the PRCA World Standings right now.
It took until the Third Round, but eventually the fastest time in Pool B belonged to Hailey Kinsel, who was 17.15 to ensure she advanced. Round 2 winner Taycie Matthews was the top earner in the pool with $15,750.
And in bull riding, Jared Parsonage was tops in Pool B thanks to a 3-for-3 performance and he was joined by a star-studded trio - seven-time PRCA World Champion Sage Kimzey, World No. 1 Ky Hamilton and 2021 Calgary Stampede Champion Jordan Hansen.
