Pool C is complete and that means the field is set for Championship Sunday in the first year of The Calgary Stampede’s new format.
In bareback riding, Round 1 winner Kody Lamb and Round 2 winner Kaycee Feild shared the top spot in the pool. Round 3 winner Kade Sonnier got by to Sunday by the skin of his teeth by taking first in a must win situation. Joining that trio of Go-Round winners is two-time Stampede winner Richie Champion.
Four cowboys won a round in the steer wrestling and those were the four who advanced. J.D. Struxness was 3.6 seconds in Round 1, Jesse Brown was 3.3 in Round 2 and Hunter Cure and Stephen Culling shared Round 3 at 3.9.
In saddle bronc riding, Dawson Hay looks like he could make a run at keeping the title in the family after brother Logan won The Stampede a year ago. Dawson won two of the three rounds to win the pool. Joining him in the Semifinals from Pool C are countrymen Ben Andersen and Lucas Macza and Texas cowboy Logan Cook.
Shane Hanchey won Rounds 1 and 3 in a loaded tie-down roping in Pool C that included 55 NFR qualifications among its competitors. Kyle Lucas claimed Round 2 to move on while Ty Harris and Blane Cox both placed in all three rounds to do so as well.
In barrel racing, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi won two rounds and racked up $16,000 on her way to a first place finish in the pool. Leslie Smalygo, who finished third all three rounds, was second while World No. Jordon Briggs and Round 3 winner Molly Otto also advanced.
No one has benefited more from ground money in the bull riding than Round 3 winner Trey Kimzey. He collected $23,250 as the only one to ride in Round 3 to give him a leg up on Josh Frost, Stetson Wright and Creek Young. All four bull riders who advanced from Pool C finished last year in the Top 11 in the world.
