California Rodeo Salinas: Recap, Highlights and Payouts

California’s highest paying rodeo finishes with Sunday’s Finals

Salinas 2024

BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN @PRORODEOBRETT

California Rodeo Salinas is the highest paying rodeo in the Golden State and one of the 15 richest of the PRCA regular season.

In bareback riding, Cole Franks scored 171.5 points over two rides, including a First Round victory, earning nearly $15,000. This propelled him from No. 15 to No. 8 in the World rankings. Franks, who competed in the NFR in 2021 and 2022, has cashed in on his last five rides.

Steer wrestling belonged to Levi, who is now No. 42 in the World after his first PRCA Playoff Series win of the season. Rudd has made $28,626 and is now less than $20,000 from his richest season in ProRodeo, $46,829 in 2018.

In team roping, the decorated duo of Erich Rogers and Paul Eaves clocked in at 46.5 seconds on five head, winning by more than two seconds over Wyatt Bray and Paden Bray. Every dollar counts as Rogers sits at No. 15 and Eaves at No. 16 in the standings. Both have made it to double-digit NFRs in their careers.

Wyatt Casper has established himself as a perennial Top 10 saddle bronc rider over the past five years, and the No. 5 rider in the World is ensuring 2024 follows suit. Despite his high ranking, Salinas marked only his second win of the season. Casper claimed victory in the Finals and the Average with 87 points on Spotted Blues.

In breakaway roping, 2022 World Champion Martha Angelone captured a coveted buckle, outpacing the field by six-tenths on three head. Angelone entered the Short Round in the lead and won it with a 4.1-second run, finishing with an aggregate time of 12.7 seconds on three head.

Marty Yates took home the tie-down roping title, marking his third rodeo win of the season, all in Playoff Series events. He was also the champion of the Clovis Rodeo (California) and Clark County Fair and Rodeo (Nevada).

Tiany Schuster claimed the barrel racing in dominating fashion by winning three of the four rounds and finishing second in the lone round she didn’t win. Schuster recorded three of the five sub-16-second times at the entire rodeo, resulting in a $17,797 payday.

The youngest champion was the final one crowned, 18-year-old Jeter Lawrence, who is now in the Top 10 after cleaning up in Salinas. He was the only one to ride in the Finals, and thus the only one to ride two, and a had a field day with ground money - bringing in almost $19,000 total.
