For the second straight weekend, the biggest PRCA rodeo was a four-day affair in California as the Clovis Rodeo concluded its 108th edition on Sunday.
The winner of the bareback riding was a cowboy who has gotten used to earning buckles. Cole Reiner rode Make Up Face for 88 points on Sunday afternoon making it two consecutive Sundays he won a rodeo after taking home the title at the San Angelo Cinch Chute Out the weekend prior.
It was the steers themselves that were the talk of the time in the steer wrestling as they weighed up to 600 pounds in Clovis. Nick Guy was the most consistent cowboy in the four-header and won the rodeo with a final time of 32.6. He placed in three of four rounds.
In team roping, there was a tie at the top between NFR Average winners Andrew Ward/Buddy Hawkins II and JR Dees/Levi Lord. Both pairs had an incredibly lucrative weekend as Ward/Hawkins brought in close to $13,000 and Dees/Lord brought in more than $11,000. That made them the Top 4 earning cowboys in not just team roping, but the entire rodeo.
Saddle bronc rider Sage Newman backed up his No. 1 ranking by going 90 on Sunday afternoon to edge out Jake Finlay, who was 89.5 on Saturday.
In tie-down roping, Zack Jongbloed entered the Finals of the four-header in fourth, but his 9.6 was good enough to win him the Average. He was 41.8 seconds on four, a full second ahead of Chance Thiessen.
Abby Phillips was the barrel racing champion and was the only cowgirl with three times faster than 17 seconds for the rodeo.
Finally, it was all-around sensation Stetson Wright winning the bull riding title with 91 points on Burch Rodeo’s Burning Bush. Wright also finished third in the saddle bronc riding with 87 points.
