Brooke Bruner has made sure to capitalize on all nine rodeos that she has gone to so far and it has her sitting No. 1 in the Resistol Rookie Race with $7,935 in season earnings.
“It’s just been incredible. I can’t even put into words how blessed I am with the horses that I have and the people that have supporting me. It’s just been an amazing year so far,” Bruner said.
A 13-year-old gelding named Taco is one equine partner that Bruner has with her and the other is a 7-year-old gelding came off the race track.
“Taco is a lot better at those shorter set ups and ones that you don’t really have to run them down and Rebel’s a lot faster on the straight away so I usually pick him on the longer set ups. He’s a little bigger than Taco is and I think that just helps him cover a lot more ground,” she said.
While hitting the professional rodeo year for the first time, Bruner is balancing it all with college. A mentor like Erin Johnson helps with all aspects but horsepower, set ups and travel in particular.
“It’s just a lot of trying to figure out when to be up, where. I try to make my college rodeos work on trying to get there Friday and Saturday and trying to get up in slacks at the other rodeos just so I can get place to place,” she said.
Bruner sits No. 3 in the Southwest Region for breakaway with sights set on the College National Finals Rodeo but in the back of her mind is a WPRA Resistol of the Year title. She is taking it all one calf at a time as her season rolls on.
