Devon Johnson, the No. 1 header in the Resistol Rookie standings, is gearing up for the Resistol Rookie Roundup in Fort Worth, April 25-26. At 26 years old, Johnson is taking full advantage of his first year entering the world of professional rodeo.
Originally a heeler, Johnson roped through college and jackpots before switching ends. He credits his partner, Boogie Ray, for helping him transition and step up his game.
“Big thanks to Boogie—he’s a huge part of where I am at today,” Johnson said.
A self-taught roper, Johnson’s confidence grew after winning the UPRA title, proving to himself, he could compete with the best. Now he is focused on gaining experience and preparing for what’s to come.
“That’s what rookie year is all about, getting experience and being really prepared for next year,” he said.
“You only get one shot at Rookie of the Year, and I’m going all out.” With the Resistol Rookie Roundup approaching and his eyes set on the Rookie of the Year title, Johnson is ready to leave it all in the arena.
