Ellensburg 2024

BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN @PRORODEOBRETT

The Ellensburg Rodeo kicked off the final month of the ProRodeo regular season with the type of standings shuffle that makes this time of year so much fun.

Bareback Rider Jess Pope Gets Within $1,000 of No. 15 Spot

Pope entered the weekend No. 17 in the World Standings, dropped to No. 18 after Nick Pelke won the Magic Valley Stampede then got back to No. 16 after a $9,233 payday for winning in Ellensburg. He started August No. 20 in the PRCA World Standings.

Pope, who has made four straight NFRs and won the Average at three of them, is $980 behind Orin Larsen for the 15th and final spot this year.

Pope was 173.5 points on two and could’ve moved even higher in the World Standings, but Larsen himself took second in the rodeo.

“Every dollar counts and when they run the good ones under me, I gotta use ‘em,” he said. “And I feel like I’ve done that.”

Wyatt Casper Sweeps Saddle Bronc Riding to Close in on No. 1 Ranking

Casper is one of three bronc riders with more than $200,000 earned this season and is now just $5,000 back of World No. 1 after rides of 88 and 89 points lead him to a dominant win.

“It’s a pretty fun competiton (at the top), you get to ride with your buddies day in and day out, and they’re the best in the World and they’re here to prove it,” Casper said.

He has won abour $60,000 since Aug. 1 to go from No. 6 to No. 3 in the World.

Tie-Down Roper Hunter Herrin Gets Back in Position for 14th NFR Qualification of Career

Herrin entered the weekend No. 17 and now sits in the all-important 15th spot after winning north of $9,000 in Ellensburg. He is now No. 15 in the World and has fifth straight and 14th overall NFR back in his sights.

Herrin’s three runs were all between 8.5 and 9.1 seconds to win the Average by three tenths with an aggregate time of 26.8.

"(The pressure forces) you to clear your mind and say you’ve done it millions of times in the practice pen and at a big rodeos like this and this is the third time I’ve been able to win Ellensburg,” he said. “It feels great.”
