The theme of Idaho’s richest one-header was ties in 2023 as four of the eight events saw the buckle get shared.
In the bareback riding, it was a family affair with the reigning World Champion Jess Pope splitting the win with younger brother Ty with 87 points apiece. It’s the first time the brothers have shared the title at a ProRodeo.
Steer wrestling saw two Top 15 cowboys, Dirk Tavenner and Don Payne, each made a 3.6-second run to edge Walt Arnold and Stephen Culling by one tenth. Tavenner is No. 6 in the world while Payne is No. 13.
In tie-down roping, veteran Shane Hanchey and 20-year-old Cash Hooper were both 7.9 seconds to win. It was Hanchey’s fifth PRCA Playoff win of the year and Hooper’s first.
The fourth and final tie came in the breakaway roping with both Addy Hill and Braylee Shepherd shutting off the clock at 1.9 seconds.
Other winners were Jake Clay/Kollin VonAhn in team roping (3.8 seconds), Ross Griffin in saddle bronc riding (85 points), Dona Kay Rule in barrel racing (16.76 seconds) and Jeff Askey in bull riding (88.5 points).
Overall, the Gooding Pro Rodeo paid $212,000.
