Hayes Weight matched up with a young bull of Harper and Morgan Rodeo Company’s, Swing Your Sword. The two would top the leaderboards for a huge pay day and the momentum is swinging Weight’s way.
“I was real comfortable. Leaving out of there, he didn’t want to stand real good and kind of rolled me to my finger tips but I just put my faith in God and just kept hustling, moving and let my body take care of the rest,” Weight said.
The $11,000 that came with the Round 1 win has unofficially moved Weight to No. 2 in the World over Josh Frost and Jace Trosclair. He only trails No. 1, TJ Gray, by $17,000 which can easily be made up with steady success in Sioux Falls.
No matter the outcome at the Governor’s Cup, the National Finals Rodeo in the bull riding is shaping up to be a tight race that will last all ten Go-Rounds in Las Vegas.
“Everybody’s riding hot, everybody’s feeling good and it’s going to come down to who’s most consistent, who rides the most and a little bit of a drawing game. But the field that’s here is so amazing and to be able to win the Round with this competition here and to be able to move up, it’s just a blessing and I’m thankful for it. I’ve got to say good job to all of my competitors because they don’t let you do it easy,” he said.
Weight was just one point better than rookies Jeter Lawrence and Rawley Johnson who split second. It was Jate Frost and Cooper James who split fourth to round out the trips to the pay window made for Round 1.
