Friday (August 28) was rough on the bronc riders at the Horse Heaven Round-Up in Kennewick with several being bucked and two in particular requiring medical attention.
Both Stetson Wright and Lefty Holman took beatings — with Lefty making it to the buzzer but grabbing his knee after landing wrong on the dismount, and Stetson being bucked, knocked out cold and stomped on.
Luckily, by the time the bull riders were up, Stetson was back on his feet and helping behind the chutes, although he chose to play it safe and not get on his bull.
“His injury did look a little scarier than it was,” says Leslie Jackson, Program Manager for the Justin Sports Medicine Team. “We like to take our time in the arena, make sure that our athletes are ok. He’s improving, I expect him to be back in the arena before we know it.”
We checked in with Jackson before the short-go in Kennewick to ask how the bronc riders’ are doing, as well as get an update on 2X PBR World Champion Bull Rider JB Mauney, who took a hard hit the head on Thursday.
On Lefty, Jackson says, “He’s gone home for the weekend. He’s going to be getting some tests done for further evaluation, and we should have an answer early next week. You know, he’s one of the guys on the bubble, so we are trying to get him as healthy as we can. We keep all of our cowboy and cowgirls as healthy as we can, but especially those guys on the bubble.”
JB took a blow to the chin from his bull on Thursday, but Jackson says there are no signs of concussion and he is healing up quickly. “JB has been here all weekend. We’ve gotten to work on him multiple times throughout the weekend. He’s improved greatly. He’ll be back next weekend ready to roll.”
