New Mexico’s highest paying rodeo headlines the weekend

FORMAT

In roughstock events and barrel racing, athletes have one shot to put up their best score and the fastest time to claim the title. In Timed Events, Champions are crowned on a two-head average.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

A year ago the winners of the Lea County PRCA Rodeo took home between $5,000 and $7,000. With just seven weeks left in the regular season, that money could change a season for an athlete of the bubble.

Looking to bareback riding, several bubble athletes are competing. No. 17 Nick Pelke, No. 18 Orin Larsen, No. 19 Sam Petersen, and No. 20 Jess Pope are all competing and are all within $11,000 of Cole Reiner who holds the No. 15 spot. Reiner will not be competing at the Lea County Rodeo.

In saddle bronc riding No. 16 Ryder Sanford is only $4,000 out of the No. 15 spot behind Logan Hay. Sanford will compete on Thursday night as he looks to close the gap. No. 15 Logan Hay will not compete in New Mexico.

With such a large slack, pretty much every timed event athlete on the bubble will be competing in Lea County. In steer wrestling, Justin Shaffer holds the No. 15 spot with $61,000 earned this year. He is being chased by Walt Arnold, Cash Robb, Rowdy Parrott, Riley Duvall, Trisyn Kalawaia, Ty Bauerle, and Clayton Hass who are all above the $50,000 mark this year.

The tie-down roping bubble is just as tight with a surging Zack Jongbloed holding the No. 15 spot at $69,500 earned. He has 10 athletes within $11,000 of him, including names like Hunter Herrin, Macon Murphy, and Trevor Hale.
