Lea County PRCA Rodeo: Recap, Highlights and Payouts

New Mexico’s highest paying rodeo was also the highest paying of the weekend

BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN @PRORODEOBRETT

At about $360,000, the Lea County PRCA Rodeo paid out more than any other during a crucial August weekend that saw cowboys scattered across the country.

Tie-Down Roper Trevor Hale Battles Back to Right Side of the Bubble

Hale was No. 19 entering the weekend and now sits in the money spot, No. 15 in the World. He won close to $8,000 there and was 18.5 on two to get it done.

Although, the 22-year-old Hale is clearly in for a heart-pounding final few weeks of the season as he hopes to make his first NFR, he told ProRodeo.com it’s not something he is worried about.

“No, I am not thinking about that,"he said. We have a lot left to do and a lot of rodeos left. That is my focus.”

Wenda Johnson Wins By Barrel Racing By .01 Seconds

Johnson took the lead after the First Performance and went on to win a rodeo that was as tight as can be. Not only was her 17.50-second run just a hair faster than Sadie Wolaver-Troyer’s 17.51, there were a total of six runs in the rodeo between 17.50 and 17.57.

Want more proof that every hundredth of a second counts? Johnson was paid $7,977 for her win, while Hailey Kinsel took home $2,393 for sixth.

Wacey Schalla Doubles Up With Wins at the Xtreme Bulls and Rodeo

Schalla was 89.5 points in the Finals of the Xtreme Bulls in Lea County and did the exact same thing at the rodeo to win both. It was the first time the 18-year-old rookie had won a rodeo and an X Bulls at the same site in his career and helped him go to No. 8 in the PRCA Bull Riding World Standings. He started August at No. 17.
