Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center brought more round records tumbling down, and if you set one on Thursday, odds are you did it again.
NFR rookie Bradlee Miller has not ridden like one so far in Las Vegas. After an 86.5-point ride on Thursday got him second place, he matched that score in Round 2, and it was good enough to win the round. He has already brought in about $70,000 at the Finals and quickly shot from No. 11 to No. 3.
In an early look at the World Title race, Keenan Hayes got a leg up on Rocker Steiner after Hayes rode for 85 points and Steiner bucked off.
Rowdy Parrott had a similar start in the steer wrestling to Bradlee Miller’s start in the bareback riding. After a 3.8 to tie for second in Round 1, he came back with a 3.6 to win Round 2. There were nine times of 4.2 seconds or faster in the round.
In team roping, Tyler Wade/Wesley Thorp have gotten off to a dream start. After setting the Round 1 record with a 3.7 on Thursday night, they turned around and did the exact same thing on Friday. Once again, the reigning World Champions were 3.7 to break the round record. Both cowboys now lead their respective World Standings by nearly $60,000 after both entering the NFR No. 2.
“I don’t know why I tried (to throw) when I did, but it worked out,” Wade said.
“I think that’s awesome (that we broke another Go-Round record), anytime you can get the week started like that, you can’t draw it up any better, so it’s gone our way,” Thorp added.
It took until Round 5 to get a 90-point ride in the saddle bronc riding a year ago, but first-timer Brody Wells didn’t abide by that memo this time around. On his second career out in Las Vegas, he was 90 on Pete Carr’s Pretty Woman to quickly pick up his first career Go-Round win.
"(I’m always going to remember) how good that felt, just nailed my start right out of there, held my feet and she broke, bailed up in the air and felt so good,” he said. “I’ve been dreaming of this as long as I can remember.”
If you’re not the reigning World Champion, you haven’t had a shot to win a round in either roping event as Riley Webb claimed the tie-down again in Round 2 with a 7.8-second run. Webb is the early leader in the NFR Average and has narrowed Shad Mayfield’s lead in the World Standings to about $16,000.
If you thought Hailey Kinsel and Sister were done after a disappointing 2023 NFR, it’s safe to say the dynamic duo is all the way back. The four-time World Champion stopped the clock at 13.48 seconds to win a second straight round and has now opened up a lead of $72,000 after entering the NFR No. 1. Kinsel now owns the Go-Round record in Rounds 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10.
To close the night another NFR rookie got their first Go-Round win early in their career. Jeter Lawrence was marked 87.5 points on a night that featured five more qualified rides.
