NFR’s Most Memorable Moments - 16-Year-Old Charymayne James Wins a Round with a Broken Bridle

Charymayne James and her horse Scamper are two of the biggest names in NFR history, they won 10 straight World Titles together from 1984 to 1993, but one run stands out above the rest.

During a Friday the 13th performance the first year the Wrangler NFR was in Las Vegas, Scamper bumped his bridle on the gate coming into the arena. It popped the Chicago screw which was holding it all together and as a result, Scamper literally spit the bit, with nothing but a little leather around his neck.

Charymayne and Scamper still didn’t miss a step, turning in a run of 14.40 to win the Go-Round.

After Scamper retired, James proved she was no one-trick pony, winning another Gold Buckle on a horse named Cruiser.

James was the first cowgirl ever to cross $1 million in career earnings and wear Back No. 1 at the NFR.
