Ote Berry was born in the South Dakota Badlands and he brought that brand of Wild West, gunslinging toughness with him to the Wrangler NFR 14 times.
In 1985, in his first NFR, Berry helped break in the Thomas & Mack Center by winning the steer wrestling average and the Gold Buckle.
In his Hall of Fame career, Berry won every major rodeo and 20 NFR Go-Rounds, seven of those coming in Round 10. The most dramatic of those wins came in 1990, when Berry won Round 10 to edge cajun cowboy Mike Smith by $148 in the Gold Buckle race.
The same was the case in 1995, when he turned in a 3.8-second run to jump from second to first in the world on the final day of the Wrangler NFR.
