Eight-time NFR steer wrestler Ty Erickson will miss at least two months of action after needing reconstructive ankle surgery following a wreck in Clovis.
According to Kendra Santos, the injury occurred when Erickson’s horse Swamper unintentionally stepped his left ankle. It was initially believed that he had just broken his fibula, but a specialist told him the damage to his ankle was far worse.
“It was just completely a freak deal,” Erickson told Santos. “When I hit and started sliding the steer, that horse got me with his hind foot.”
Erickson is currently ranked No. 4 in the PRCA World Standings with $53,598 and has a cushion of about $27,000 on No. 15 Clayton Hass. Last year, it took $84,612 to qualify for the final spot in the NFR.
He is targeting a return for The Calgary Stampede which begins on July 5.
