With around 45 days left of the 2023 regular season, standings are beginning to tighten up. That is no different in bull riding, where Stetson Wright currently holds onto a $31,000 lead over new No. 2 Josh Frost. Looking further down the standings there has been a line drawn in the sand. Those inside the Top 21 in the world have a shot at the NFR, those on the wrong side of the line are all but eliminated, barring a miraculous run.
Here is a look at the Top 21 in the World and how their seasons have gone to date.
1. Stetson Wright, $223,861
A week ago Stetson Wright held a $33,000 lead over Ky Hamilton who was No. 2 at the time. That lead has shrunk by around $2,000 as Josh Frost now sits No. 2 and Wright leads him by over $31,000. Conveniently enough, that is about one round’s worth of money at the 2023 NFR. Over the weekend, Wright proved why it is never easy to catch him as he covered 2-of-3 bulls and made close to $5,000 combined for second place at the Summit County Fair (Utah) and fourth at the Cache County Fair and Rodeo (Utah).
No. 2 Josh Frost, $192,171
Josh Frost has put together another great season. He took over second place in the PRCA World Standings after a weekend that saw him win over $6,000 at the Owyhee County Rodeo (Idaho) where he placed first. Frost is coming off a great second half of July where he placed third at the Fiesta Days Rodeo (Utah) with a 90-point ride to earn over $6,500. To follow that up, Frost took the Average at California Rodeo Salinas and earned over $14,000 in total at the rodeo. The most recent big win for Frost came at the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo (Colorado), where he placed third and won another $3,600. Although he overtook Ky Hamilton for No. 2 in the PRCA World Standings, he currently holds that lead by just $65.
No. 9, Cody Teel, $108,705
The 2012 World Champion is having a renaissance in the PRCA. Teel has not made the NFR since 2016 and has not finished inside the Top 10 since 2015, both of which he aims to do in 2023. Teel had a great second weekend of August that saw him win the Bluegrass Pro Rodeo (Kentucky) and the Lawton Rangers Rodeo (Oklahoma). Those two wins earned him a combined $9,000 towards his season earnings.
