Reno Rodeo: Recap, Highlights and Payouts

The Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West felt like just that in 2024

BY BRETT NIERENGARTEN @PRORODEOBRETT

The Reno Rodeo began 100 Rodeos in 100 Days with a grand start, paying out over $800,000 and awarding silver spurs to some of the sport’s finest.

Shad Mayfield Goes Back-to-Back

After starting slow by not placing in Round 1, the top-ranked tie-down roper in the World rolled through Round 2 and the Finals with times of 7.5 and 7.6 seconds to win Reno for the second straight year.

“You can’t back off right there and I knew I had a really good calf and the horsepower, so that made it easy,” he said.

Mayfield’s aggregate time of 25.2 seconds was even better than last year and he won more than $16,000 to extend his lead in the PRCA World Standings to $62,000.

Hailey Kinsel Breaks Through

After finishing second twice in the prevous three years, Kinsel and Sister made a 17.06-second run in the Short Round to seal the win by less than a tenth of a second over Emily Beisel, who was 16.99 on Saturday.

“This is so special, I’ve known my horse could do it and I just wanted to prove it to her and to myself and all you beautiful people,” Kinsel said. “This is incredible, Sister deserves it.”

With runs of 17.27 in Round 1 and 17.21 in Round 2, Kinsel placed in all three rounds to win more than $15,000 and jump from No. 10 to No. 5 in the WPRA World Standings.

Tristen Hutchings Goes 90 Twice For Emotional Win

There had not been a bull ride marked more than 90 points in Reno since 2019 and Tristen Hutchings decided to change that two times over.

With matching 90.5-point rides in Round 1 and the Finals, he ran away with the Avearge, winning by 5.5 points and becoming the second bull rider to sweep Reno since 2020. JB Mauney also did it in 2021.

“Last October before the NFR, I lost my mom in a car accident and I haven’t really won anything too big since then, so I wanted to dedicate this win in Reno to my mom,” he said.

The win made Hutchings, who also rode for 90 in Parker County earlier in June, the No. 6 bull rider in the PRCA.

The other champions were RC Landingham in the bareback riding (257 points on three), Dalton Massey and Tucker Allen in steer wrestling (13.9 seconds on three), Andrew Ward/Kollin VonAhn in team roping (16.1 seconds on three), Ryder Wright in the saddle bronc riding (259.5 points on three), and Taylor Munsell in breakaway roping (8 seconds on three).
