Resistol Rookie Saddle Bronc Rider Ira Dickinson Talks Tarleton State, Golden Permit and Keeping It Simple

Ira Dickinson leads the Resistol Rookie Race early in the season.

Wyoming’s Ira Dickinson’s permit year was filled with success and he has rolled right into his Resistol Rookie Year on the same train. With almost $13,000 already in season earnings, he leads the Resistol Rookie Race and sits No. 12 in the PRCA World Standings.

“It’s exciting to see where we’re at but, once again, it’s early in the season so I’d like to see where it goes,” Dickinson said.

Dickinson’s trip to the Mountain States Circuit Finals came with two Go-Round wins and an Average title coming his way. Before that, he picked up a check in at the Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo.

“A lot of that came down to just the caliber of horses we were drawing so that was a big, big thing there. I kind of got pretty lucky, Coleman Shallbetter, one of my friends a traveling partners from down there at Tarleton, he was right on our tail the whole way through and about caught us right at the end,” he said.

The Mountain States Average Title had landed Dickinson in the draw for the NFR Open later this season. As for his permit year, Dickinson was able to capitalize on good draws at the right places but he says he would not be where he is without the crowd around him.

“Some of the guys that I have to say thank you to, I mean, Cort Scheer, both of the Crawley’s, especially Mr. Jacobs, Mr. Mark Eakin and that whole Tarleton team. I mean, before I showed up to No. 1 Goodwell and Tarleton as well... But those are the places and those are the people and the horses that have helped get all of us... where we are right now,” he said.

While Dickinson had a permit for seven years, he looks at that as an advantage as he learned where and when to go on it while also achieving a masters degree in the process. The Resistol Rookie Race has been salty the last two years but Dickinson’s game plan comes from a quote he heard from Clint Johnson, make as good of a ride on every horse that you possibly can and everything else will take care of itself.
