Riley Webb is now within $5,000 of both World No. 2 Ty Harris and No. 3 Haven Meged as he has now earned over $213,000 on the season after a Round 1 win at the Governor’s Cup.
“You learn so much every year, last year I came here and I broke the barrier twice and this year I was trying to be sharp at the barrier and let the calf have a chance,” he said. “Knew the calf was pretty good, so just tried to make the best run I can.”
The best run he could make resulted in a 7.6.
Webb, the reigning World Champion, still has a bit of ways to go to catch Shad Mayfield ($246,722), but he has certainly made it clear that he will be a factor for the Gold Buckle once again. It could be shaping up to be a four horse race as World No. 5 Marty Yates is $58,000 behind Webb and $91,000 behind Mayfield.
“It’s you versus the calf, you can’t look at it like your versus everyone else,” he said. “The standings, whatever else is going on, you just have to take it one run at a time.”
