RodeoHouston: Preview, Format and How to Watch

Houston PFH

When breaking down the most important rodeos of the Regular Season, every list needs to start with RodeoHouston. Not only is it the highest-paying rodeo of the season, but it all but locks up an NFR appearance for athletes.

A year ago, all but one athlete who finished first or second in Houston would go on to compete at the NFR.

This year, the most lucrative rodeo got even more lucrative, with winners taking home $65,000 compared to $50,000 a year ago.

The RODEOHOUSTON® Super Series is a 20-day tournament-style competition that crowns an event champion in bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, women’s barrel racing, and breakaway roping.

With a total payout of $2,533,500, each champion is awarded $65,000 (plus previous round winnings), a custom-made saddle and belt buckle, and an invitation to compete at RODEOHOUSTON the following year. RODEOHOUSTON is an official PRCA NFR money event, with earnings from RODEOHOUSTON counting toward qualification for the NFR and the PRCA/WPRA World Standings.

The RODEOHOUSTON Super Series consists of 40 top Rodeo competitors competing in eight events. The series is divided into five parts, each consisting of three rounds. Each of the three rounds includes nine contestants. The top four competitors in each Super Series advance to one of two Semifinal rounds. The top four competitors from each Semifinal go to the Championship. The remaining six competitors from each Semifinal get one more chance by competing in one of two Wildcard rounds. The top athlete from each Wildcard advances to the Championship.

Ten athletes compete in the Championship. The top 4 in each event ride one more time in Shootout. The Champions take home $65,000, a custom-made saddle, and a belt buckle.

What to Watch For:

With over $2 million on the line, the best athletes in the world will descend on Houston in search of what would be their biggest win of the season.

Stetson Wright will compete in the opening Super Series in the Bull Riding as he looks to continue his impressive return. Wright is scheduled to compete in the first three rounds as each Super Series consists of three performances.

Wright is No. 1 in the Bull Riding World Standings with over $52,000 earned this year. Wacey Schalla and Trey Benton III are both within $4,000 of Wright for the lead in the Bull Riding standings.

Rocker Steiner will be competing in a tough Super Series that begins on Thursday, March 13. Steiner is coming off a second-place finish in 2024. His 2025 is off to a slow start, with just $125 earned on the season. Steiner has ridden just three of five bucking horses and has been over 76 points in just one of those rides.

The current World No. 1 Bareback Rider. Bradlee Miller will compete beginning on Monday, the 10th. Miller has a stacked Super Series to compete with. He will be riding against 2024 World Champion Dean Thompson, three-time World Champion Tim O’Connell, and former NFR qualifiers Chad Rutherford, Coop Cooke, and Jacob Lees.

The two-time defending World Champin Riley Webb is scheduled to compete beginning on Monday the 10th and will rope against big names like John Douch and Cory Solomon. Webb is currently in seventh place in the Tie-Down World Standings with just over $30,000 earned.

Current World No. 1 Shad Mayfield competes in the final Super Series, which begins on Sunday the 16th. Mayfield has already earned nearly $60,000 on the season as he looks to get back to the top of the Tie-Down Roping mountain for his third World Title.

In Saddle Bronc Riding, the opening Super Series is the one to watch. Brody Cress, Lefty Holman, Dawson Hay, and Ryder Sanford are all competing in the first three performances in Houston.

Dawson Hay is off to the best start we have ever seen in a Roughstock event. While he may be in second place, nobody has ridden better. All but one of his rides have been over 85 points this season and he is coming off a win at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rode.
