San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo GM Josh Hilton talks upcoming Cinch Roping Fiesta

They love their roping in San Angelo and Thursday-Sunday, the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo hosts its annual Cinch Roping Fiesta.

General Manager Josh Hilton joined Steve Kenyon on Western Sports Round-Up to let fans know more about what is happening in the heart of Texas this weekend.

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a match roping between Shad Mayfield and Tuf Cooper for $20,000 and a champion will be crowned in the open breakaway roping and invitational tie-down roping.

Last year was the first year of the breakaway roping at the Cinch Roping Fiesta and it was an invitational event, but now it is open to anyone. The winners will receive $20,000 in both events.

“Everywhere has breakaway and we’re just happy to get some really great names here,” Hilton said.

Additionally, there will be live music from Josh Ward and Triston Marez immediately following the performance on Saturday night.

Hilton said fans in San Angelo keep coming back year-after-year because San Angelo is an “old-school” roping with bigger calfs, a 600-foot long arena and a hand-pulled barrier.

“It’s a grand tradition, it’s a throwback, you have to be in shape, you have to have good horses,” Hilton said. “It separates the men from the boys.....It can really kickstart a guy’s 2022 season.”
