San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo: Bracket 3

Bracket 3 of one of the biggest rodeos of the year is here. Four competitors from each event in the previous two brackets have cinched their spot in the Semifinals and Bracket 3 will add to the list.

BAREBACK RIDING

Tim O’Connell has matched up with Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Baby Face and Gander Goose along with J Bar J’s Night Lizard. Gander Goose is a rematch for the three-time World Champion while Night Lizard is a National Finals bucking horse that carried Cole Reiner to an 83.5 in Las Vegas. Young guns Waylon Bourgeois and Kade Berry are also out and gunning for one of four spots.

STEER WRESTLING

South Dakota’s Jace Melvin picked up some momentum in Denver and is making his second out in the Texas Swing. He made it to the Final round of San Antonio in 2022 with his fastest time of 3.8 seconds getting him started in Round 1. NFR bull doggers Riley Duvall and Tanner Brunner are among the 10 that stand in between Melvin and a shot in the Semifinals.

TEAM ROPING

Riley and Brady Minor made it through to the Finals in 2022 while Jake Orman and Brye Crites did not make it past their bracket. However, these two teams are both NFR qualifiers and with all of the new teams in the 2023 season, the fact that they have roped in San Antonio as duos before might give them the upper hand in Bracket 3.

SADDLE BRONC RIDING

Canadian cowboys Logan Hay and Ben Anderson both sit within the Top 25 in the PRCA World Standings. Hay has matched up with Calgary’s Birch Bubbles, a horse that he rode for 84 points in Fort Worth less than two weeks ago. One of Anderson’s matchups is Calgary’s Xena Warrior who Stetson Wright rode for 90.5 points also in Fort Worth.

TIE-DOWN ROPING

Luke Potter is the only one in Bracket 3 who made it past his bracket in 2022. He tied his fastest time in the Wildcard Round with an 8.2-second run to pull a check and move on. He has the likes of Ty Harris, Taylor Santos and more all roping to win each round.

BREAKAWAY ROPING

Cadee Williams finished second in San Antonio in 2022 with a 2.2, just one tenth of a second off the winning time. She is back and this time, it is ladies like JJ Hampton, Jackie Crawford and Erin Johnson that she has to beat to get back to the Semifinals.

BARREL RACING

It is a stacked field of barrel racers. Sissy Winn threw down the fastest time of the rodeo in Bracket 2 but with Lisa Lockhart, Emily Beisel and Brittney Sporer in the draw, that could change. Lockhart’s trailer full of horsepower is undeniable while Beisel’s Chongo has been a force to be reckoned with this winter. Sporer’s mare, Paint, is also a fan favorite and even though she is small, can never be counted out.

BULL RIDING

The dominant Tristen Hutchings is back in San Antonio and carrying with him momentum unlike any other. He covered one bull in San Antonio in 2022 and this year he faces Cervi Championship Rodeo’s To Light The Torch and Vitalix Yellowstone. While Vitalix Yellowstone is unridden this season, To Light The Torch has three scores on him and all were in the money.
