Sawyer Gilbert is a name that we have heard all season long in the breakaway roping.
The South Dakota Cowgirl had a phenomenal year as she won Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Pendleton Roundup and more. She was back and forth with Shelby Boisjoli all summer long and it came down to ten rounds at the Orleans in Las Vegas.
Gilbert won the second ever Breakaway World Championship after battling it out for ten rounds to be 46.30 seconds on ten head. Gilbert was also the only competitor in the Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping to rope all ten making her the first ever Average Champion in the Breakaway. They did not award and Average Champion in Arlington in 2020.
The breakaway roping is the fastest event in rodeo and for two days and ten rounds in Las Vegas, the ladies got to show off. They are lightning fast and it has become a fan favorite event. The sport of breakaway roping continues to grow and the crowning of the second ever World Champion is proof.
