The Sheridan WYO Rodeo is a Top 25 paying PRCA Playoff Series Rodeo and was one two in the Cowboy State over the weekend that paid more than $300,000.
Fans in Sheridan were treated to a big-time win from one of their own in bareback riding, a three-peat champion in the steer wrestling, a reigning World Champion claiming the tie-down roping, a thrilling three-way tie in the bull riding and more.
Buffalo, Wyoming native Cole Reiner was 88.5 on Sankey Pro Rodeo and Phenom Gentics’ Land of Fancy to win the bareback riding by a half point over R.C. Landingham. It’s Reiner’s fourth PRCA Playoff Series win this month.
In steer wrestling, reigning Reserve World Champion Will Lummus was 9.4 seconds on two head to find himself in a familiar position at this rodeo.
“Yeah, that was a three-peat. Sheridan has been really good to me. It’s funny because I don’t know what changed,” he told ProRodeo.com. “I had never won a dollar there. I liked going but didn’t have much luck. It’s definitely different now.”
Caleb Smidt bested the rest of the field by 1.5 seconds in the Average with two 8.3-seconds runs in the tie-down roping, the latter of which won him more than $3,000 as the champion of Round 2. Smidt banked nearly $11,000 in Sheridan on his way to moving up 13 spots in the PRCA World Standings over the weekend.
In bull riding, Ky Hamilton, T Parker and Fultin Rutland were all 89.5 points to split one of the toughest rodeos in that event we’ve seen all year. There were a total of five rides marked 89 or better and the cowboys had to be at least 87.5 points to get paid. For some more perspective, JR Stratford won the entire rodeo last year with 86 points and 83 points got Tristen Hutchings fourth.
The remaining champions in the 2023 edition of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo were Erich Rogers/Paul Eaves in team roping (12.0 seconds on two), Q McWhorter in saddle bronc riding (90 points), Lisa Lockhart in barrel racing (17.21 seconds) and Jackie Crawford and Amanda Coleman in breakaway roping (8.1 seconds on two).
