Two-time National Finals Rodeo steer wrestler Cody Devers went from picking up the win at the Rio Grande Livestock Show and Rodeo to having success at his Super Series in RodeoHouston. While they are two entirely different setups, Devers capitalized on both opportunites.
“You know, luckily I got to go to Mercedes before Houston. So we’ve been running them pretty fast anyways around here so I was kind of ready for that start. Whenever you’re going against 80-100 guys that really can do it, you can’t be off the barrier so I just knew I had to go fast on that and then whenever you get to Houston, you know, just realx. You’re going to run them out there, it’s a football field,” Devers said.
Devers horsepower is courtesy of Bridger Anderson and Anderson added to it when he doubled as the hazer too.
“So it’s been great. I’ve been riding Whiskers of Bridger Anderson’s at a lot of the building, a lot of them kind of tight, confined areas. I’ve got a young horse that I’m starting right now, took to Tuscon, made the Short Round on her. She’s just kind of getting to where she’s going to be ready this summer,” he said.
Whisker gives him the stability of veteran horsepower and he will occasionally bring out his own veteran equine partner, Sassy, when he needs to. But Devers is building up the young ones to make sure that his equine arsenal is loaded all summer long.
“At some point, you just have to take them. Whenever yours might go down and might need a little rest or something, sometimes that’s the motivation you need to get them in the trailer and get that experience,” he said.
On the other side of it, Devers himself is fully healthy and healed after a torn peck took him out of his NFR in 2021.
“Anytime you have an injury like that you’re going to have little afterward things that are going to kiind of tear that you don’t really know about. We got to figure it out and got to sit with Justin Sportsmedicine quite a bit. Now I’m 100% sound and really looking forward to this year. It’s been a great start and now having anything hurt is different,” Devers said.
Devers is the No. 5 steer wrestler in the PRCA World Standings with over $28,700 to his name already this season.
