Will Lummus is no stragner to success in the Thomas and Mack but the seven-time National Finals Rodeo cowboy is taking a different approach this year and it has already paid off.
“You know, I’ve tried for so long to come in here and win a Gold Buckle. My wife and I had a long talk about it. I’m just having fun, you know, I come in here and I’m getting close to the end of my career and I’m just having fun,” Lummus said.
Another signifcant change we saw in Round 1 for Lummus was his horsepower. He still had Clayton Hass hazing but Benz was not the horse he backed in the box on. Instead, both horses that were a part of Lummus’ run are young, first-time NFR horses, Swamper and Lucky. This particular element of his success is something that Lummus says was so cool.
“You know, it’s funny how the Lord works, you know, me and Benz have won so much money in this building and it hurt my soul when he got hurt back in the summer. He could’ve come back but he wasn’t really going to be ready so I decided to jump on that one, it’s funny how the Lord works,” he said.
Aboard Swamper, Lummus put together a 3.7-second run to win Round 1 by one tenth of a second over Cash Robb and Rowdy Parrott who split second and third.
