Marty Yates on his Win in Lawton

With his horses out of commission and not much won in recent weeks, tie-down roper Marty Yates has been having a rough go of it lately — but his luck changed this weekend in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Riding Caleb Smidt’s horse Pockets, Marty went 8.6 seconds on the final night of the Lawton Rangers Rodeo to split the win in a three-way tie, a win he says he needed for more than one reason.

“Oh man, I needed it a lot,” says Marty, who at the time was sitting at No. 17 in the World (he’s now No. 13), " and not just for the Standings but for my confidence.”
