NFR’s Most Memorable Moments: Ty Murray’s Seventh All-Around Gold Buckle in 1998

Ty Murray’s dream from when he was a toddler was to break Larry Mahan’s record of six All-Around World Titles, but he had to endure surgeries on both knees and both shoulders to get the job done.

Murray won the All-Around Gold Buckle six years in a row from 1989 to 1994, but it wasn’t until 1998 that he broke the tie with Mahan, his hero.

Fittingly, Mahan was watching arena-side and was the first to congratulate him.

Murray had 19 total NFR qualifications in rodeo’s three roughstock events. He won bull riding World Titles in 1993 and 1998.
