Leo ‘The Lion’ Camarillo, a team roper who was in the inaugural Hall of Fame class in 1979, died on Dec. 30 at age 74.

Camarillo was known as a terrific horseman and a terrific all-around cowboy as well. He went to the Wrangler NFR 20 times and won the average six times thanks to his polished heeling style.

“Heaven gained another great cowboy today as we sadly say goodbye to the roping legend, Leo ‘The Lion’ Camarillo,” the Bob Feist Invitational said in a statement. “Sending many prayers and blessings to his friends and family as they mourn the loss of one of the greatest cowboys who bettered the sport of team roping for all of us.”

Leo’s brother Jerald, who went to the NFR 17 times, said no one loved the sport more than his older brother.
