Angela Ganter Overcomes Tragedy to Win Day 3 for Pool B in Calgary

For barrel racer Angela Ganter, the 2021 Calgary Stampede has been an emotional one, to say the least.

The night she arrived in Calgary, Angela tragically lost her beloved and best horse Bugs. On top of that, when Bugs fell, he fractured her ankle.

Even still, Angela was able to get in the money in the first round of Pool B, placing fifth on Day 5 of the rodeo, and then sixth on Day 6.

On Day 7, in the third round for the second crop of contestants, Ganter turned in a time of 17.37 to win the go-round — two-hundredths of a second ahead of Pool B average leader Shelby Spielman.

She now sits fourth in Pool B, in semi-finals contention, with $7,000 total won in Calgary.

“It’s absolutely been crazy,” says Ganter. I’ve cried more this week than I’ve probably cried in my life. I spent eight years beating breast cancer, never cried, and I’ve cried more this week over the loss of my best friend. ... and I just thank God up above. You know, you just keep looking up and you’ll always make it through.”
