Brody Cress became the first saddle bronc riding champion at The Calgary Stampede to come through the Wild Card since 2014 on Sunday evening.
Cress, a three-time Cheyenne Frontier Days champion, was 94.50 on Special Delivery to win the Showdown. It tied the arena record, making Cress the second cowboy to reach that feat after Kolby Wanchuk did in Pool A competition.
“That’s a horse I got on at the Finals last year, he gives you every chance to go out there and win, I was just trying to keep up with him,” Cress said.
After finishing with $7,500 to finish fifth and $500 out of a Round of 10 spot in Pool B, Cress was 88 points on Birch Bubbles in the Wild Card on Saturday to advance to Showdown Sunday.
“To be able to have the opportunity to get on horses like that, in front of a crowd like this on the biggest stage,” he said. “It pumps you up and makes you want to step out there and do your best.”
