On Sunday, Stetson Wright not only won his second consecutive All-Around Championship in Cheyenne, he also became the first of the Wright family dynasty to ever earn the Saddle Bronc Riding title at The Dad — turning in the first 90 point ride of the rodeo in the Final round for the win.
We caught up with Stetson following his ride on Championship Pro Rodeo’s Feather Fluffer, who’s notorious for being a pile of points but also tough in the chute.
In fact, Feather Fluffer went down when Stetson got on her at the Finals, but taking his brothers’ advice, he went for it, as opposed to opting for a reride, “because I didn’t want to take second place,” he said with a laugh. “I knew that horse was going to give me a shot to win it.”
It was the right call to make. Stetson won the bronc riding, and then went on to place fourth in the bulls, getting him to his second All-Around title. You would never have known that just a day before, he’d had his bell rung in the arena.
During the Semis round on Saturday before the Finals, Stetson collided with his bull and hit the ground hard, and he was immediately sent to the Justin Sports Medicine team. But the cowboy says there’s no reason to talk injury when you’re feeling fine.
“If I wasn’t healthy enough, then I wouldn’t be getting on today, so I’m not going to sit here and cry about past injuries, even if they happened,” he said. “But it didn’t affect me today, so you won’t hear about it.”
On being the first Wright to win the bronc riding: “It means everything,” Stetson said. “I mean, to ride against my brothers and uncles here. And then for it to come down to me, I guess, beating Ryder, I mean, had his ride been a little closer, we might have tied out of here. But I’m happy I got the win, and we’re all riding good, so I’m happy about that.”
