Rodeo Austin concluded with its winner-take-all Championship Round on Saturday night and every single event champion won at least $12,000 with some topping $18,000.
The story of the roughstock events was huge scores and familiar faces. In both saddle bronc riding and bull riding, the champion was marked 92 points or higher.
Leon Fountain rode Beutler & Son’s Killer Bee for 92 to win the saddle bronc and in bull riding, Stetson Wright was remarkable once again, covering Andrews Rodeo’s Wild Onion for 93 after riding for 92 to win Houston one week earlier. In bareback riding, nine-time NFR qualifier Caleb Bennett won Rodeo Austin for the third straight year.
“It feels awesome, to three-peat here, to be in front of this crowd, the great people of Austin, to be here rodeoing, doing what I love, wouldn’t have it any other way,” Bennett said.
In steer wrestling, Talon Roseland won both the Semifinals and the Championship round with times of 3.4 and 3.7 seconds respectively. In barrel racing, Destri Devenport dominated in a similar fashion by winning the Long Round and the Finals with two of three fastest times of the rodeo.
“I’ve been to a lot of rodeos and this has by far been the best,” Devenport said. “There’s nothing like running home on a horse like Titan and hearing the crowd yell.”
Finally, in the roping events, Nick Sartain/Reagan Ward were 4.2 seconds to win the team roping and Shad Mayfield stopped the clock at 7.4 seconds to win the tie-down. Mayfield was faster than 8 seconds on all three of his runs at Rodeo Austin.
“Winning, that was the best part (about my run tonight),” Mayfield said. “It seems like I haven’t won a rodeo in forever.”
