Top-Ranked Tie-Down Roper Shad Mayfield Splits Win in First Round After 7.6 in 13th Performance of Rodeo Austin

On the last day of competition in Round 1, Mayfield made his mark

Thursday night marked the official conclusion of Round 1 for the timed event athletes after 13 performances at Rodeo Austin, and it was none other than World No. 1 Shad Mayfield who snagged a share of the Round 1 win with a 7.6-second run.

“It was a really good run, everything just worked out how it was supposed to, calf was decent, bigger calf than we’ve been roping, but I’m on my new horse, her name is Rachel, and she cleaned everything up,” he said.

It was Mayfields first run at rodeo on Rachel, but not the first time Rachel has been a tie-down horse. Mayfield purchased her from 2016 World Champion Tyson Durfey.

“She straightened everything up and brought that calf to me and made me 7.6,” he said.

Mayfield tied with Cooper Martin in Round 1 and each roper took home more than $4,000.

Mayfield has won two of the first three Texas Swing rodeos, but to advance in Austin, it is the Top 8 on two, so Mayfield’s work to add a third buckle at the big indoor rodeos will continue Friday night.
