Breakaway has officially been a part of the PRCA for three years now. Ladies are competing in both events and they are going hard to be in the top 15 in the world. With the Texas Tour officially over, here are ten things you need to know about what happened in the breakaway.
1. Rodeo Houston had equal money.
It was the first time that Rodeo Houston had breakaway roping as an event and they did it big when they announced that the money for the ladies was going to be the same as every other event. The first ever Rodeo Houston Breakaway Roping Champion walked away with $50,000.
2. Erin Johnson claimed a historic win in Houston.
With a 2.7 second run, Johnson was the only clean run in the Breakaway Finals at Rodeo Houston making her the clear champion. This win sent Johnson to No. 1 in the WPRA World Standings.
3. The Hanchey’s hit it hard in Super Series 4 of Rodeo Houston.
Taylor Hanchey was last out in Houston when she tied for the No. 1 spot with a 2.9 second run and cinched her spot in the semifinals. That same night, her husband and World Champion Tie-Down Roper Shane earned his spot in the Semifinals as well. It was a good night to be a Hanchey.
4. Amanda Coleman takes Clovis win.
During the California swing, Clovis Rodeo added breakaway roping to their lineup and crowned their first ever champion. Amanda Coleman won by one tenth of a second when the calves were chute run on a five-year-old horse. She currently sits No. 14 in the WPRA World Standings.
5. Kelsie Domer takes the title in Fort Worth.
Domer roped in Bracket Six and although she was consistent, she qualified to move on to the Wild Card Round where she was second. She won her Semifinal with a 2.3 before she came back in the Finals and threw down with a 1.8 to be your champion.
6. Tacy Webb was an underdog at Fort Worth.
Webb gave a performance at Fort Worth showed that she could become a household name. She advanced from Bracket Three into the Wild Card Round where she won it with a 2.2 and she went on to win her Semifinals with a 2.1 while competing with World Champions and the top breakaway ropers in the world.
7. Martha Angelone topped San Antonio.
Angelone is sitting No. 11 in the WPRA World Standings and she took home a big check from the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. She stayed steady through her bracket and then she came back with a fire to win the Semifinals and the Finals.
8. Taylor Engesser is persistent.
Engesser has only competed at five rodeos in the 2022 season but her consistency in the arena has her sitting in the top 10 in the world. The South Dakota cowgirl at more than $17,000 to her name.
9. Sawyer Gilbert got it rolling in Red Bluff.
The reigning World Champion Breakaway Roper laid down the fastest run of the rodeo at the Red Bluff Roundup. Gilbert came out swinging to stop the clock at 2.6 seconds to win the first round.
