WPRA President Jimmie Munroe on National Breakaway Roping Finals, Growth of the Sport and More

WPRA President Jimmie Munroe shares the numbers and excitement for the season.

The National Finals Breakaway Roping is set to kick off at the South Point in December and for the first time you can catch all ten rounds on The Cowboy Channel.

“We’re just so excited to have The Cowboy Channel doing the live broadcast of the finals for the first time, we’re just really looking forward to it,” Munroe said.

In the last five years, the number of PRCA rodeos that include breakaway has gone from 34 to just under 500 with the big rodeos like Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Pendleton Round-Up leading the charge.

As for the NFBR, records are so close to being shattered. Shelby Meged is the No. 1 cowgirl going into it and at the 2023 NFBR, she barely missed breaking the earnings record.

“I think it’s going to be great. Shelby is going in with $146,000 and the Top 6, their all within $15,000 of each other,” she said.

The breakaway ropers have delivered in showcasing their event to only continue the growth and for the year of 2024, that growth includes full coverage on The Cowboy Channel and a total payout for the regular season coming in at $5.5 million to cap it off.

December 3-4 is when the Top 15 breakaway ropers in the World will start the battle for Gold.
