Team roper Steve Northcott won the World Championship in 1996 and last roped at the NFR in 1999, now his son is bursting onto the scene with a successful first year on the CPRA and UPRA in Texas.
Nicky Northcott, 15, is No. 5 in the UPRA and one of our Wrangler Rising Stars.
“It’s just really fun to rope with a veteran (Cody McClusky). He’s taught me a lot,” he said.
Northcott has experience both heading and heeling, but is primarily a heeler.
“Heeling is way more fun for me,” he said.
Northcott has obviously also been influenced by his father and has been lucky enough to be around some of rodeo’s most decorated families, in addition to his own. In 2020, he won $20,000 at the USTRC roping with Tyler Tryan, the son of 19-time NFR qualifier Clay Tryan.
“That’s just the next generation that’s going to rodeo just like their dads, maybe even better,” Northcott said.
